Attitude of Spiritual Modesty
“Humility is best exhibited by a constant thinking of other people.” -Francis Chan
I want to start from the beginning of the year when we were looking back at 2020, and the effects that Covid-19 had on our lives. We all recognized that 2020 was a disruptive year, and it’s hard to believe that we’re still in this pandemic.
As we were moving into 2021 I was asking the Lord for direction for our church and myself, and through that time there was a word that emerged, and it was Humility.
If I were to choose a word for a year, I would want: promotion, power, joy, or adventure, but the Lord put humility on my heart.
God showed me that there’s too much pride in our world, even in Christian circles. And in that season, there was a verse that came out of Micah 6:8 that says “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” We are called as believers to walk humbly with our God.
Humility is not meekness, weakness, self-effacing, and it’s not submissive. C.S. Lewis said, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, instead it’s thinking of yourself less.” Humility is the mindset that we are not as good as we think we are on our best day, and not as bad as we think we are on our worst day.
Rooted in Scripture: James 4:10 Ephesians 4:1-2 1 Peter 5:5-6 Proverbs 3:34 Jeremiah 9:23-24 1 Corinthians 1:31 |
Benefits of HumilityPeople that walk in humility:
Humility in RelationshipsI did this leadership growth for a season, and met with a leadership guy for about 6 months. In that season, one of the key points that came out of it was this phrase: In our relationships with others, we want to approach them as if we have nothing to gain, nothing to lose, nothing to hide, nothing to prove. When you think about the relationships in your life, are there things you’re trying to gain or prove in your relationships? How can you bring more humility into your relationships? I believe if we get our minds around humility, we would be unlocking the power of humanity. We want humility to be so revered that it would become the mother of all virtues. Exhibits HumilityWho comes to mind when you think of someone who is humble? When you walk into a room with someone that is humble, the atmosphere changes. It diffuses any tension that there may have been because that person sees their strengths and weaknesses without judgment or defensiveness on anyone in the room. It’s interesting that this is the year we are focusing on humility because this is also the year we’re celebrating our 20th anniversary as a church. It doesn’t feel like they can coincide, we want to celebrate and boast for being a church for 20 years. But let’s have a humble approach to celebration. We should boast in the Lord and what He has done in and through our church. |
